Job Description
J.C. Newman Cigar Co. was founded in 1895. With our headquarters, factory and museum located in historic Ybor City (Tampa), Florida, J.C Newman Cigar Company is the oldest family-owned cigar manufacturer and distributor of premium cigars in the country and operates the last cigar factory in the Cigar City of Tampa.
 
Leveraging your expertise and experience in a manufacturing and distribution environment, the Lead Electrician will play a key role in both production machine troubleshooting and building maintenance. You will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on all electrical components associated with production machines and equipment. Additionally, as a member of the building maintenance team, you will ensure the functionality and reliability of all electrical systems, wiring, and equipment throughout the facility. The Lead Electrician will also collaborate with the maintenance team to identify and address other facility needs, such as plumbing, carpentry, and general building maintenance tasks as needed.
 
Essential Duties, Functions, and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with production mechanics to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair relay logic circuits and control boxes that ensure smooth machine operations.
  • Perform general electrical repairs on outlets, switches, and circuit breakers throughout the factory.
  • Test and troubleshoot electrical systems and components related to machinery, including humidification systems, shipping conveyor lines, and other essential operational equipment.
  • Install new electrical outlets, switches, and other necessary electrical components.
  • Work with both single-phase and three-phase electrical systems, ensuring proper setup and functionality.
  • Install conduit for electrical systems as needed, ensuring compliance with safety standards and factory requirements.
  • Maintain and repair low-voltage electrical equipment, ensuring all systems are functioning efficiently.
  • Preferred experience working with relay logic controllers, circuits, and electrical systems to support the factory's production operations. 
This role is critical to ensure that the electrical systems in the cigar manufacturing plant operate safely and effectively, supporting production goals while maintaining high standards of quality and reliability.
 
The Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities are as follows:
  • High school diploma or equivalent trade school diploma in electrician education.
  • Five years’ experience as an electrician; preferably in a manufacturing or related industry.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Must have your own set of basic electrician hand tools

  • Ability to work on feet for extended periods and perform physical tasks.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and safely climb an 8-foot ladder
  • Must be able to work on machine equipment where components are found under the equipment
  • Must be able to work in crawl space areas and tight quarters for troubleshooting and repair of electrical components
  • Use of power tools (drills, saws, etc.) for maintenance tasks and repairs.
  • The work environment is maintained at a controlled temperature and humidity due to the nature of the product
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but if performing work in areas deemed high noise areas, hearing protection will be supplied and required while in the designated area.
