J.C. Newman Cigar Company was founded in 1895. With our headquarters, factory and museum located in historic Ybor City (Tampa), Florida, J.C Newman Cigar Company is the oldest family-owned cigar manufacturer and distributor of premium cigars in the country and operates the last cigar factory in the Cigar City of Tampa.
 
Job Description:
With the expansion of our restaurant, hotel, and cigar lounge, we are excited to offer a new position that will play a key role in supporting both our growing ventures and the traditional aspects of the business. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance and collaborating closely with the Chief Financial Officer, Corporate Financial Accountant, Accounting Manager, and the accounting team, the Accountant will be responsible for assisting with the preparation of financial reporting for numerous companies, reconciliation of bank accounts, intercompany ledgers, regulatory filings  and the compilation of  balance sheets and income statements.  This position will cross train and assist in various accounting functions across different departments, so a positive, adaptable, and collaborative attitude is essential. With each area/project of involvement we would encourage process improvement. We are looking for a team-oriented individual who is able to pivot when needed, multi-task in a fast-paced environment, and leverage their analytical skills and attention to detail to contribute to the success of the accounting department. 
 
The essential skills and experience require an individual who can:
  • Performs general cost accounting and other related duties in the accounting department
  • Reconciliation of balance sheet accounts including, but not limited to cash and intercompany
  • Assist in preparing financial statements for multiple companies and performing journal entries
  • Assist with federal and state licenses and filings as well as monthly sales and use tax which will include a review of donations
  • Prepare monthly closing reconciliations and supporting documents
  • Run monthly Integrity Reports (internal accounting system reports to determine all monthly transactions are in line with expectations)
  • Assist in the daily operations and oversight of the hospitality group related to the restaurant, cigar lounge and hotel.
  • Review larger invoices (phone, cell phone, etc.) to analyze usage and confirm contracts and provide use by departments or companies
  • Review balance sheet and income statement accounts for proper coding of transactions
  • Review and balance monthly donation detail and prepare journal entry for Cigar Family Charitable Foundation
  • Assist with processing annual state registration for Cigar Family Charitable Foundation
  • Review the procedures and provide backup support to the Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Purchasing departments
  • Perform other duties as assigned
 
Requirements for Consideration:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Minimum of three years of relevant accounting experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office while experience with JD Edwards, Power BI and QuickBooks is a plus
  • Possess the ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Experience in restaurant, hotel and/or hospitality accounting is desirable
  • Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Have strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience managing financials across multiple companies is preferred
  • This position requires you to work on-site at our Tampa, Fl office. Remote work is not an option
 
Physical Demands and Work Environment of the Job:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
  • Subject to inside environmental conditions; and
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but if performing work in areas deemed high noise areas, hearing protection will be supplied and required while in the designated area
